3. After locating John
Six-Killers party, Gardners detachment begins skirmishing with the enemy also.
Back at "Fort Africa," Captain Crew and Lieutenant Huddleston each grabbed a
rifle, and proceeded towards the sounds of the skirmishing, without orders. Captain Seaman
found himself in an uncomfortable position for any commanding officer to be in. Somewhere
off to the south, he now had approximately 30 men of his command engaging the enemy; an
enemy whose size, composition, and disposition were not known. Seaman was quickly loosing
control of the situation. Needing more information about what was transpiring out of his
sight to the south, and perhaps fearing the worst, Captain Seaman decided to send out a
third detachment under the command of Captain Ward.
